Our tooth enamel is the hardest substance in the human body, but it can be easily damaged by acidic conditions. If we eat too much sugar and carbohydrates, or if we have too much bad bacteria in our bodies, then our teeth soon suffer decay. This is because the sugar decays into acid, brought about by the bacteria. The gums will also suffer under these conditions.

When we brush our teeth we remove a lot of the sugar and food debris, and we kill off a lot of the bad bacteria. Flossing provides the same cleaning action between the teeth where the brush cannot reach. This goes a long way towards preventing tooth decay. But there will still be some sugar and carbohydrates in our bodies no matter how much we brush. This tends to cause decay.

We can help the situation by eating more natural food and avoiding sugar and junk. Drinking more water and chewing sugar-free gum will also help.

If a tooth is damaged, it will need either repair or replacement. There are several options.

Fillings repair a tooth that has suffered partial decay. Often a patient will not report a damaged tooth until it is causing them pain. By this stage, the damage has already become severe. The decayed section of the tooth will need to be drilled out and replaced with a filling. Older fillings were amalgam, which was a dull silver colour. New fillings are white in colour and look like natural teeth. Unfortunately, these do not last as long as older fillings.

A tooth that has suffered an infection, often due to decay, may need a root canal treatment. This means removing the nerve inside the tooth and filling the space left behind.

Sometimes a tooth needs to be completely replaced. If it is just the outside of the tooth that is damaged, the dentist will fit a cap, also called a crown. This is an artificial tooth made of porcelain, or lithium disilicate. Crown technology is quite advanced. New crowns should last several decades.

If a tooth is lost entirely, the dentist will use an implant. This is like a crown but the inside of the tooth is removed and replaced with a metal rod that bonds to the jawbone. Implants look and feel like natural teeth. They should last several decades if cleaned twice daily with regular brushing.
