Orthodontists provide a different, more specialised type of treatment that general dentistry. Dentists cover a broad range of issues, including maintenance and repair of teeth gums and jaws. Orthodontists receive further training to look after teeth and jaw alignment.

Most people think of braces when they think about orthodontists. This is largely correct; most orthodontic work is done with braces. But there are also modern alternatives to braces, such as Invisalign. And Orthodontists may also perform surgery.

Braces and other orthodontic work is often about straightening teeth. This might be necessary for functional reasons, as crooked teeth can make eating and speaking difficult, or compromise breathing at night. Of it may also be done for purely aesthetic reasons, as straight teeth almost always look better.

Crooked teeth usually do not exist in isolation. The teeth may be overcrowded, so a few teeth have to be removed before the braces are fitted. Or the jaws might be misaligned, which means the braces are used to correct both the teeth and the jaw alignment.

Overbite is a disorder where the top row of teeth are too far forward. Milder cases of overbite can be corrected with braces. Ideally the top row of teeth should be very slightly in front of the bottom row.

Underbite is the opposite of overbite; the bottom row of teeth are too far forward. This can also be corrected with braces if the condition is not too extreme.

Crossbite is where the lower jaw is not positioned in line with the top jaw; the bottom jaw leans to the left or right. Braces, usually with elastics, can correct this condition on most cases. There are also modern alternatives to braces which help align the jaws.

Some patients have temporomandibular disorders. This is where the jaw clicks of locks when we eat and speak. Mild cases of this tend to be harmless. Some cases can be corrected with proper chewing technique (we might habitually chew on one side of the mouth). In some cases orthodontic work is required.

Other issue, such as a jaw being too narrow, are also treated by an orthodontist. The jaw might be corrected with a palatal expander.

Invisalign, a system of clear mouthguards, is an alternative to braces that is popular with adults. Invisalign performs most of the function of braces, correcting all but the more extreme alignment issues.
