What to do if a filling or crown comes off?

We have a very large number of patients who come to us because their fillings or crowns have come off.

What to do if a filling or crown comes off?

1. Do not force a removed filling back into place.

(If the fillings are not in place properly, the bite and other parts of the bite may become incorrect and the fillings may not be repositioned).

2. see your dentist as soon as possible

If no secondary decay is found under the removed filling, the filling can be refilled, but if secondary decay is found, the tooth will need to be treated and a new filling made. Secondary cavities are often large and deep, so if a nerve has been affected, nerve treatment may be required. If the situation is serious, the tooth may be lost.

Why do fillings and crowns come off?

Firstly, there are two types of fillings or crowns.

  1. Adhesive – such as silver and PFMs, which are crowns with metal inside.
  2. Bonded – composite resin (dental-like plastic) fillings and all-ceramic fillings and crowns.

Adhesive fillings use a glue to seal the space between the cavity and the filling and to harden the filling, while composite fillings use a scientific reaction of chemicals to bond the filling to the tooth.

The glue used to make the mould usually weakens after about six years. As the glue weakens, a gap is created between the filling and the natural tooth, which is very likely to lead to secondary decay. In most cases, when a secondary cavity develops, the silver tooth that was filled is removed, but sometimes the filling is left in place, but a cavity may have formed underneath the filling without anyone noticing. As these cavities are very difficult to see with the naked eye, it is very important to have regular x-rays and dental check-ups.

Nowadays, customised ceramic fillings (inlays/onlays/semi-crowns) and crowns can be made using a 3D computer.

Ceramic fillings are made from safe, natural materials specially manufactured for dentistry, making them extremely strong, gentle on the body and allergy-free.

These beautiful fillings and crowns use a special bonding method that prevents the filling from falling out like silver teeth.

Another advantage is that they prevent secondary cavities (new cavities that form where cavities used to be), which are common with silver and composite fillings.
