When should children start orthodontics?

When it comes to orthodontics, some people may think that it cannot be done until the permanent teeth have come in.

In fact, there are actually two main stages of orthodontic treatment for children.

*Stage 1 Treatment started before the permanent teeth are present.
*Stage 2 Treatment started after the permanent teeth have come in2

Stage 1 treatment started when permanent teeth begin to erupt.

Using devices to control the growth of the jaw and the movement of the tongue

  • Improve bad habits that affect the alignment of the teeth
  • To correct the size and distortion of the jaws
  • Ensure space for the permanent teeth to line up properly.

Patients who are eligible for the first stage of treatment are mainly

  • Patients who have had their teeth, misaligned by their dentist during a school check-up.
  • Teeth have grown in an odd position
  • Have bad habits (bad habits*) that affect the alignment of their teeth.

The first stage of treatment uses individualised orthodontics.

One of these, Myobrace, is a paediatric orthodontic treatment method that incorporates myofunctional training, which originated in Australia.

What is myobrace?

It has spread to more than 100 countries around the world as a method of orthodontic treatment for developing children without the need for tooth extractions or brackets (wire devices) by focusing on the cause.

Myobrace is an early preventive orthodontic treatment that aims to work on the underlying causes of bad teeth.

The optimum age is between 3 and 15 years, and involves a series of removable appliances worn in the mouth for one to two hours a day and at night while sleeping.

Myobrace are also ‘training’ to develop correct dental alignment, and by using the child’s natural ability to grow, they can effectively and naturally straighten the braces with less force.

In most cases, natural growth and development can be achieved without tooth extraction or bracket braces.

According to the latest research, most dental malpractice is due to underdevelopment of the jaws.

Jaw underdevelopment restricts the space for teeth to grow and prevents them from growing in the ideal position, but can be detected when the child is still young.

Myobrace has been developed to address these incorrect oral habits, teaching the child nasal breathing, correct tongue position on the upper jaw and correct swallowing, and helping the jaw to fully develop to its natural size. As a result, there is enough space for all the teeth to fit and straight teeth grow naturally without the use of brackets.

Creating a healthy skeleton and function
Encourages anterior growth of the maxilla for better skeletal structure and function, including breathing, swallowing, tongue position and lip closure. Also helps to improve snoring.

Beautiful facial features.
Anterior growth of the maxilla is a major health as well as aesthetic point of view. Myobraces can be expected to give a dignified facial appearance.

Less burden on the child.
As no wires are used, this orthodontic method is very easy on the individual. The mouthpiece can only be worn for an hour when awake and when sleeping, and training can be done at home for 2 minutes x 2 times a day.

Healthy eating habits can be developed.
The system works on problems such as airway dysfunction and teaches children good eating habits while achieving their original normal development, so that they can naturally lead a healthy life.
